On the Wednesday 8th April 2009 - WOMEN LIKE ME (WLM) will host probably the first ever careers fair aimed at children and their parents/carers.

Invitations have gone out to all secondary schools in the borough to attend the fair but it is open to any young person aged 10 and upwards who are accompanied by an adult.

Local and national employers will be on hand to talk about their jobs, how they got them and what qualifications they needed.

Children and parents will also get the opportunity to attend seminars and hear from the most influential and successful men and women who work in London and the UK.

Delia Edwards, Chief Executive, of Women Like Me (WLM) said: "Young people are the future

not only for the borough but also for city of London. Our research tells us that too many

young people leave secondary education with little or no qualifications. They neither have

any plans to attend college, university or even to find full time employment. We want to reverse

that trend by introducing children to the vast amount of career opportunities that will be

available to them. Children can begin planning their career destination and how to get there.

"We also recognise that the levels of unemployment in Southwark are well above the national

average, it is for this reason we are also encouraging parents to attend the event and seek

out local career and educational opportunities to help them back into work. We believe that

parents are a child’s greatest role model. Great careers aspirations cannot be achieved

alone they need to be achieved as a family.
